DEK HOCKEY LEAGUE INFO

Ages: 6-18 years old, boys and girls

Pottstown Area PAL Dek Hockey is a variation of ice hockey in which players run on sneakers instead of skates. It is played on blacktop, using a ball instead of a puck. Operating continuously since 1996, Pottstown Area PAL Dek Hockey is the largest intramural dek hockey program in Eastern Pennsylvania.

Players are placed on competitively-balanced teams and we attempt to vary the coaches your child will take instruction from season to season. All players are eligible to play in an older age division or pay an additional $25 to play in two age divisions (their natural division and the next division up). At registration, players have the option of opting to try the position of goaltender on a full-time or part-time basis, and the league has goalie equipment available which stays at the rink.

Teams have one designated practice night a week, Monday through Friday. Parents can request during registration to not have practice on a certain night due to personal conflicts, however no requests are guaranteed. Siblings in the same division are placed on the same team.

Games are on Saturdays and Sundays. Older levels have games in the morning, going in descending age order to the youngest level in the afternoon. Games generally take an hour. All teams play a slate of 10 regular season games, and all qualify for the double-elimination playoff tournament of series which follows.

Players brand new to the league will be contacted about a low-key evaluation session prior to the season, and shortly after that, all players are notified of their team and schedule.

For children in pre-kindergarten or kindergarten, Pottstown Area PAL holds an instructional program rather than competitive league play. Hour-long sessions are held on weekend late afternoons, resulting in 12 to 15 sessions by the end of the program.

There is no weekend commitment, and there are no games. The sessions feature drills, groups, and scrimmages under the instruction of multiple on-rink coaches. Lessons build from one session to the next. The focus of this instructional program is to teach basic skills and to get acclimated to the sport and physical activity within a controlled group atmosphere.

More experienced five-year-olds, or those turning six, have the option of playing up in the regular league at the parent’s determination, or play in both.

All new players in the instructional program receive their first one-piece stick from PAL, free of charge.

ADDITIONAL COSTS AND EQUIPMENT

The cost of registration only partially covers the expenses of administration, insurances, training equipment, facility rental, facility maintenance & care, and restrooms among other necessities. Fundraising is necessary to keep families’ participation costs down.

The required equipment to participate includes:

(1) a helmet with cage,

(2) gloves,

(3) elbow pads,

(4) leg pads that cover the knee and shin.

These four pieces of equipment are able to be rent for a season from PAL. There is a $5 or $10 fee for each item ($25 for all), and you can select the option during registration. Sizing and pickup happens shortly before practices begin, and you will receive an email notification.

All players must possess their own stick, either a one-piece composite or a two-piece with a wood shaft and plastic blade. They are available at local sporting goods stores. Be sure to look for the cheaper “street hockey” sticks instead of ice hockey sticks.

Players receive a PAL team shirt to use for the season and keep afterward.

NOT SURE ABOUT DEK HOCKEY?

Many kids end up preferring the speed and teamwork of hockey to other activities, if only they get a chance to be exposed to it. League games take 30 timed minutes, and players change on and off the rink after every two minutes or so. All players are guaranteed equitable playing time, insofar as this is possible. And while all sports carry the risk of injury, dek hockey is a closely regulated sport. Two trained referees are on hand to call penalties to keep games safe. Checking is not allowed in dek hockey.

Pottstown Area PAL is pleased to work once again with Pottstown School District coach Isetta Hewlett for the summer lacrosse camp at our sports complex. The program is open to all area children, elementary through middle school. No prior experience required. The camp is meant for both boys and girls, and there will a specific boys coach with much experience on hand as well. Overview

The Red Knights have partnered with Pottstown Area PAL and have joined the Independent Youth Football League (IYFL). This league will consist of 15 teams, forming 3 divisions. Each team will play a full regular season (4 home and 4 away), and there will be 3 playoff games.

Additionally, there will also be an opportunity for the winners of our league to advance to regional and national championships. National championships will be held in Orlando, Florida.

FOOTBALL

Red Knights Football season will now have 5 different divisions. Please note there are a few small changes from previous years. Travel to away games will vary but could be 1 hour:

Flag Football - There will continue to be a Flag Football team for all children 7 and under.

7U Tackle - Previously referred to as the "Rookies". This division will now include children 7 and Under. Additionally, this will now be 11 vs. 11, a change from the previous 7 vs. 7.

9U Tackle - Previously referred to as the "Sophomores". This division will include children 9 and Under.

11U Tackle - Previously referred to as the "Juniors". This division will include children 11 and Under.

13U Tackle - Previously referred to as the "Seniors". This division will include children 13 and Under.

Practices are planned to start the first week of August, and the first games will be the Saturday BEFORE Labor Day.

TEAMS

7 U Tackle - 6-7 years - Players may not turn 8 prior to July 31st of the league year

9 U Tackle - 8-9 years - Players may not turn 10 prior to July 31st of the league year

11 U Tackle - 10-11 years - Players may not turn 12 prior to July 31st of the league year

13 U Tackle - 12-13 years - Players may not turn 14 prior to July 31st of the league year

8th grade students are eligible from playing as long as the do not turn 14 before July 31st.

SEASON

Our Family Orientation will occur at Connie Batdorf Park in Pottstown, Pennsylvania and will be announced shortly. Families can meet under the pavilion. Practice starts the week of TBD. Regular season games begin on in September and run through the end of October. If your tackle team qualifies for the playoffs, playoff games will run until the second or third week of November.

PRACTICES AND GAMES

In August, practice is tentatively four nights a week (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday) from 6:00-8:00pm. After school starts, practice is three nights a week (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday) from 6:00-8:00pm. We plan to hold practices at PAL Sports Complex, but this may be subject to change due to field assignments determined by the school district. Practice schedules and details will be issued by the beginning of August. Games for flag are usually on Saturday mornings and tackle teams usually play on Saturday afternoons. Home games are played at PAL Sports Complex in Pottstown.

GAME PLAYING RULES

Quarters are 10 minutes, with a maximum of 10 minutes at halftime. Each team has 11 players on the field. Touchdowns are worth six points. The point after touchdown is worth one point if by pass or rush, or two points if by place or drop kick. A game during the regular playing season can end in a tie and is counted as such.

PRACTICE UNIFORM

For practice, all Tackle players should wear a helmet, chin strap, mouthpiece (not clear), red practice jersey, shoulder pads, practice pants, athletic supporter and cup, girdle to place pads into, hip pads, thigh pads, knee pads and tail pad (or practice pants with built-in pads). Please bring a water bottle labeled with your child's name. During heat acclimation practice jerseys/tshirts should be white. At the end of heat acclimation we EARN OUR COLORS and we switch to RED practice jerseys.

GAME UNIFORM

All Tackle players will wear a helmet, chin strap, colored mouthpiece (not clear), game jersey, shoulder pads, flat black game pants with built-in pads, athletic supporter and cup. The Norchester Red Knights will provide your child with a helmet and shoulder pads. Equipment is to be returned clean after the last scheduled game. Game jerseys will be purchased at the time of registration (this is built into the cost). Jerseys are for the players to keep and will not be returned at the end of the season. You will need to provide cleats (molded rubber), chin strap, colored mouthpiece (not clear), athletic supporter and cup, red practice jersey and flat black football pants with built-in pads.

NOTE FOR ALL PLAYERS: There is a $150 BOND CHECK REQUIREMENT for your player to receive their uniform. This is a PER PLAYER requirement.

PHYSICAL EXAM FORM

Each football player is required to have a physical exam completed by a physician before practicing with the team. This is done at the expense of the parent/guardian. Physicals must be returned no later than August 1, 2023, to start practice. AGE APPROPRIATE

To ensure a safe and positive playing environment, each player is placed in a division based on age of their peers. Our programs have no cutting of rosters.

COACH CERTIFICATION & CHILD SAFETY

Norchester and PAL are highly committed to player safety. Our coaches are properly trained and certified by USA Football to provide the best development experience in our players, while reducing the risk of injuries. We teach Heads Up Football℠, the new standard for football leagues that is focused on four key areas: (1) coach education, (2) safe tackling, (3) concussion awareness, and (4) proper equipment fitting. This teaching model provides our coaches with the right materials and teaching techniques for different age groups. All coaches, assistant coaches and any volunteers in direct contact with players have completed a criminal background check and child abuse clearances.

COMMITTMENT

Football is considered one of the most rewarding, yet demanding of all little league sports. Therefore, it requires a strong commitment to the program. The success of the program is driven by the level of support delivered by our coaches, players, parents, volunteers and the community.

For practices, all cheerleaders should wear a t-shirt or tank (no spaghetti straps), cotton athletic shorts and white cheer shoes. Pull hair back in a ponytail and remove all jewelry including post earrings, jeweled bobby pins and hard plastic headbands. Please bring a water bottle labeled with your child's name.

GAME UNIFORM

Norchester Red Knights will provide your child with a cheerleading uniform (vest and skirt) for use during the season. You will receive a white long-sleeve bodysuit, black bloomers, cheer socks and a hair bow from us at uniform distribution (included in your registration fee). Please provide white white cheer shoes for your child.

NOTE FOR ALL PLAYERS:

There is a $150 BOND CHECK REQUIREMENT for your player to receive their uniform. This is a PER CHEERLEADER requirement.

Pottstown Area PAL is pleased to host the second season of the high school varsity Trojans ice hockey team. PAL’s team is open to both Pottstown students and students in districts without access to a high school varsity team (including Pottsgrove or private and home schools). Although not a school-run activity, the PAL Trojans play with the support and encouragement of the Pottstown Schools Co-Curricular Department.

The PAL Trojans play in the Central Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League. All practices and the large majority of games are a half hour from Pottstown, at Body Zone in Wyomissing. Sessions are held at night, both weekday and weekend, from October to the end of February. Last year, a handful of away games were played, in Annville, Lancaster, and Harrisburg. The team played 18 league games, as well as exhibition games at the Reading Royals Santander Arena.

For new players considering signing up, prior experience in organized ice hockey is not needed, and most returning players are still learning. Players are encouraged to work on ice skating in the offseason at public skate sessions at local ice rinks (Body Zone in Wyomissing, Center Ice in Oaks, Power Play in Exton, Iceline in West Chester).

Get a ID number from USA Hockey at https://membership.usahockey.com/register/age Select “player/coach”. The fee is $70. This is required to participate in any youth ice hockey in 2022-23. Save your confirmation code.

PAL wrestling singlets are to be rented out only for the season. Headgear must be worn, either purchased on your own or borrowed from PAL for the season at no cost. Failure to return PAL items in acceptable, clean condition at season’s end will result in a fee.

Wrestling-specific shoes, necessary to safely get grip on mats, must be purchased by the individual family for their child to use prior to their first match. These are available at Schuylkill Valley Sports at Coventry Mall.

The division of athletes will take place according to grade and gender. Exact breakdowns will be determined closer to program launch, and depend upon enrollment details.

Some Thursday practices in May and June will become semi-competitive intrasquad competitions. Tuesdays will largely practice and training. Sprints, short distance running, long jumps, and relay preparation will all be part of this introductory program.

Get your child healthy, active, and outdoors competing with friends today. Track is an exemplary conditioning activity, strengthening the legs, core, lungs, and heart. This comprehensive fitness opportunity is available to children from any school district, while slots remain available.

You will not need to purchase any track-specific additional items to participate. Running shoes are mandatory, spikes are optional. Your child should also wear shorts (joggers over top if particularly cold). Program t-shirts will be provided at the first practice.

COACHING & VOLUNTEERING

At registration, parents have the option of selecting to volunteer, either as a coach or more generally. Coaching assignments are not guaranteed but decided by the Program Director in coordination with the Executive Director and Executive Board, in accordance with our Background Check Policy.
